THE CLASSICAL
ACADEMY OF ARMS CODE OF ETHICS
As a classical fencing instructor I will:
-
ensure that my students have a safe environment
for learning, that I enforce safe conduct by my students, and that I
personally set a standard of safe conduct.
-
represent my level of skill, ability, and
certification as an instructor accurately.
-
teach my students to the best of my ability, and
in accordance with the actual technique of fencing in the period from 1880 to
1939.
-
appropriately supervise individuals in training
to become instructors or to upgrade their credentials, and develop their
ability as professional instructors.
-
participate in professional continuing education
to further develop my skills as a fencer and as an instructor.
-
recognize that I hold a position of authority,
and not enter into improper business or professional relationships with my
students or physically or psychologically abuse them.
-
recognize when a student requires instruction at
a level that I cannot provide, and appropriately refer that student to another
qualified instructor.
-
not speak ill of other fencing coaches, schools,
or methods of fencing.
-
treat all students with respect and fairness,
regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, age,
religion, political affiliation, or disability.
-
maintain an appropriate standard of grooming and
personal hygiene, dress in a professional manner when teaching, and conduct
myself with appropriate decorum and professional reserve.
-
safeguard the property of my students when it is
entrusted to me.
-
ensure to the greatest degree possible that my
teaching space presents a professional and welcoming atmosphere in which
students feel comfortable.
-
conduct my business affairs as an instructor in
accordance with generally accepted standards of business ethics.
-
make every effort to instill in my students a
sense of sportsmanship and fair play and a life long love of fencing with the
sword.
